As many as 67 percent of Latvian drivers exceed speed limit on daily basis, according to the results of a survey conducted by the research agency Norstat on behalf of the insurer Ergo.
The survey concludes that the biggest speed violators are men, residents of Riga and Pieriga region, as well as people in middle age and with higher incomes.
The results reveal that men are more reckless drivers than women when it comes to speeding. 74 percent of men and 60 percent of women admit to speeding.
When analyzing age groups, speeding is most common in the 30-49 age group. 72 percent of respondents in this age group say they speed on a daily basis. Meanwhile, younger and older people drive slightly more responsibly, with 66 percent and 57 percent of respondents in the 18-29 and 60-74 age groups respectively speeding.
The results also show a correlation between people’s income and their speeding behavior. In particular, as income increases, the number of speeders increases. For example, 61 percent of the population with an income of EUR 751-1,000 per month admit to speeding, while 84 percent of those with an income of EUR 1,500 or more do so.
The survey also shows that almost half or 48 percent of Latvian drivers have never been fined for speeding, while 42 percent have been fined between one and three times and 10 percent more than three times.
The survey was carried out in June 2024, with 1,002 respondents aged between 18 and 74 years surveyed online across Latvia.
