Seven out of 10 people in Lithuania do not think that voting in municipal council and mayoral elections should be allowed from the age of 16, according to a survey by Baltijos Tyrimai for the public broadcaster LRT.
70 percent disagree with the idea, 22 percent think young people should be allowed to vote in elections, while 8 percent had no opinion on the matter or did not answer the question.
The Constitution stipulates Lithuanian citizens who are 18 years old on the day of the election are eligible to vote.
Youth organizations and some parliamentarians believe 16-year-olds should also have the right to vote in local elections.
The survey of 1,018 Lithuanians aged 18 and over was carried out by Baltijos Tyrimai, a Lithuanian-British market and public opinion research company, on November 16-27.
