70 percent of the Lithuanian population would not support the introduction of universal conscription of men and women, according to a new survey commissioned by the country’s public broadcaster LRT.
One in four Lithuanian adults is in favor of the idea, 6 percent are strongly in favor and 19 percent are rather in favor. Seven out of ten people are against, 32 percent are strongly against and 38 percent are rather against. 5 percent had no opinion or did not answer this question.
Men (29 percent) are more likely than women (23 percent) to support universal conscription for both men and women, as are respondents with the highest monthly family income of over 1,800 euros (27 percent), and people in managerial positions (47 percent).
People living in smaller cities (74 percent) are mostly against the idea, followed by respondents with incomplete secondary education (82 percent), the unemployed and housewives (78 percent) and young people in education (78 percent), and non-Lithuanian respondents (80 percent).
Men over 50 (33 percent would support it and 63 percent would oppose it) are more likely to support the idea, and women over 50 are more likely to oppose it than women under 50 (74 percent oppose it and only 19 percent support it), the survey shows.
The survey of 1,017 adults was carried out by Baltijos Tyrimai on December 15-30, 2023.
People were asked whether they agreed that Lithuania should introduce universal conscription for both men and women as soon as possible. The issue of universal conscription for both women and girls, however, is not currently on the political agenda.
