Patient’s relative attacks and injures doctor at Riga Eastern Hospital

A relative of a patient at Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (Eastern Hospital) attacked and injured an ICU doctor after disputing a medical panel’s conclusion that the patient was brain dead.

The hospital’s spokeswoman Ilga Namniece told LETA that the patient was admitted to the Eastern Hospital after prolonged resuscitation attempts. Medics at the hospital continued to treat him, but after all the prescribed diagnostical examinations and medical panels, a procedure was started to pronounce the person brain dead.

The patient’s relatives who categorically disagreed with the medical panel’s conclusions, aggressively interfered in the work of the intensive care unit, and one of them physically assaulted a doctor, inflicting bodily injuries. The injured doctor had to take a sick leave and was eventually hospitalized herself.

The hospital’s administration called the police over the incident.
