Saeima today approved in the second reading amendments to the Road Traffic Law, which envisage higher fines for speeding.
The amendments stipulate imposing a fine of between EUR 720 and EUR 960 for speeding between 61 and 70 km/h instead of the current EUR 360 to EUR 480, and to suspend driving licenses for nine months instead of the current six months.
However, the fine for speeding in a populated area will increase from EUR 540 to EUR 680 now to EUR 1,040 – EUR 1,400 and the driving license would be suspended for nine to 12 months.
In the case of speeding of more than 70 km/h, regardless of the location of the offence and the type of vehicle, the amendments provide for a fine of EUR 1,400 to EUR 2,000 and the suspension of driving licenses for 12 months to 36 months.
Drivers who violate a provision of the Road Traffic Law several times, which is captured by a speed camera, will be fined once within a 24-hour period.
Drivers with a suspended driver’s license who are caught driving a motor vehicle will be fined EUR 280 to EUR 700.
The amendments also specify the definition of an e-scooter and provisions for driving one.
In the meantime, the Interior Ministry has withdrawn its proposal to suspend driver’s licenses for driving more than 30 km/h over the speed limit.
