Red flood warning issued for Jekabpils area

A red flood warning has been issued for residential areas on the banks of the River Daugava from Jekabpils to Zelki.

An ice buildup up the river from Plavinas has caused water levels in the Daugava to rise in a section of the river from Jekabpils to Zelki, as the Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center informed LETA.

As a result, extensive areas may be flooded along the river, the center explained.

As reported, moving ice in Jekabpils area is causing water levels in the River Daugava to rise, Andris Viksna, the head of the forecasting and climate department of the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, told journalists. The flood risk is expected to persist in the next coming days.

Viksna warned that this year, the highest flood risk is for people living on the banks of the Daugava in the Plavinas-Jekabpils section. Farther upstream, in Augsdaugava Municipality, the flood risk is lower.

The thaw that has started in Latvia is melting the ice in the Daugava, causing chunks of ice to move and form large congestions in the river. The water level in the river remains high and some gardens in Jekabpils have already been submerged.
