Vast majority of Estonian residents not satisfied with PM’s work

The vast majority of residents of Estonia, almost 70 percent, are dissatisfied with the performance of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, the findings of a survey commissioned by the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues indicate.

Since the end of 2021, the institute and pollster Norstat have asked voters once a month for their assessment of the performance of the prime minister and the government. At this point, 69.3 percent of voters do not approve of Kaja Kallas’ performance as the head of government, while 66.4 percent rate the government’s performance as poor.

Only people who vote the Reform Party are positive about Kaja Kallas’ actions, whereas those disapproving of the premier’s actions make up a majority among the supporters of all other parliamentary parties.

The same is true for the assessment of the work of the government. Although criticism of the performance of the government and the prime minister  declined marginally compared with last month, it has remained at a very high level for several months. During the past year, negative opinions grew in two waves. First, after the March 2023 elections and in parallel with the formation of the new government, and, for the second time, in the context of the Russia haulage scandal and the government’s actions last autumn, whereas now problems are further exacerbated by the almost universally unpopular car tax, the institute said in a press release.

It also noted that as things stand, voters are somewhat more critical of the prime minister than of the government as a whole.
