Lufthansa Cargo to operate regular cargo flights to Riga Airport

German air cargo carrier Lufthansa Cargo has started regular cargo flights to Riga Airport, making it the first Baltic airport with which Lufthansa Cargo has a regular direct cargo connection, Ilze Salna, the airport’s communications project manager, told LETA.

The opening of regular cargo flights will allow Latvian manufacturers to better plan and reach new markets in Lufthansa Cargo’s cargo network faster, as well as local businesses to import goods from other countries more easily and quickly at competitive prices. The advantage of cargo flights is the ability to transport larger volumes of cargo at the same time without splitting it into several flights, and the possibility to transport bulky cargo that cannot be accommodated on passenger aircraft, explains Eligijus Jentkus, Head of Air Cargo Development at Riga Airport.

“Lufthansa Group is a long-standing and stable cooperation partner of Riga Airport and we are delighted that Riga Airport is the first Baltic airport where Lufthansa Cargo is launching such scheduled air cargo flights,” he emphasizes.

Henning Oldendorf, Lufthansa Cargo’s Sales Manager for the Nordic and Baltic region, notes that Riga is an important logistics hub, especially for the computer equipment and healthcare industries, but he believes the company’s capacity will also be useful for other industries that require fast air freight. He stresses that the new connection will be important for the whole region, given that the air cargo segment at Riga Airport is growing.

Lufthansa Cargo will operate cargo flights to Riga once a week using Airbus A321F aircraft with a maximum cargo capacity of 28 tons.
