Culture Minister Logina resigns

Culture Minister Agnese Logina (Progressives) has decided to resign from her post, citing personal reasons, and is quitting the job on June 17, Lita Kokle, a spokeswoman for the Culture Ministry, informed LETA.

Logina indicates that important reforms have been started in the sector. The outgoing culture minister notes that it has been a great honor and responsibility for her to serve Latvia and its people.

“This time has been characterized by both difficult moments and successes, and I am proud of what has been achieved and boldly announced. For personal reasons, I have decided to step down as culture minister,” she said.

Logina took office as culture minister on September 15, 2023. Under her leadership, the Culture Ministry has established Media Policy Guidelines and started the process of merging Latvia’s public service media. Additional financial support has been provided for cultural education programs for children and young people, remuneration of artists and art collectives, capacity building of public service media and regional content development.

Kokale notes that the Culture Ministry has contributed to the creation of a safe learning environment and a change in management culture in cultural education institutions. Several major building renovation projects have been approved, including the New Riga Theatre, the Latvian Puppet Theatre, as well as the first renovation phase of Riga Castle, where the Latvian National History Museum will soon return. The future of the Corner House has been resolved to ensure that the work of the exhibition is not disrupted.

Kokale emphasizes that work has started to improve the management of the companies under the Culture Ministry’s supervision. The final decision on the design competition of the Riga Philharmonic building has also been taken, and steps have been taken towards the establishment of the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art.
