Lithuanian president appoints Simonyte as PM, asks her to form Cabinet

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda signed on Monday a decree appointing Ingrida Simonyte as prime minister and asking her to form her Cabinet within 15 days.

The parliament expressed its confidence in Simonyte last Tuesday after she returned her Cabinet’s mandate to Nauseda following his inauguration for a second five-year term as president.

Nauseda said during the presidential election campaign that he wanted changes in the Cabinet

Recently, Agriculture Minister Kestutis Navickas and Health Minister Arunas Dulkys have faced the most criticism from the president and his team.

The president and the prime minister plan to discuss the potential Cabinet composition later this week.

Nauseda said last week that he expected the issue of ministerial changes to be resolved “very quickly”.

Simonyte has not yet said whether and which ministers might be replaced. She said that changes, if any, would have to ensure better work quality.

The ruling bloc also believes that there is no point in appointing new ministers with several months to go until the October 13 parliamentary elections.
