Latvenergo invests nearly EUR 6 million in solar power plant in Birzi

Latvian energy group Latvenergo has invested nearly EUR 6 million to develop a new solar power plant in Birzi, Jekabpils municipality, LETA was told at the company.

The 11.7 MW power plant of Latvenergo’s solar energy brand Elektrum Solarais in Birzi is expected to generate 10,000 MWh, or 10 kWh, or electricity per year. This amount is enough to supply 9,500 households with electricity for about half a year.

The solar park consists of 17,820 solar panels, 50 inverters and five compact transformer substations.

At the same time, the company says that Latvenergo’s strategic goal is to build 100 MW of new solar park capacity this year, as the company marks its 85th anniversary.

The solar park in Birzi is currently the largest of several solar parks planned in Latvia. The new portfolio will consist of several 5-15 MW Latvenergo solar parks, spreading and balancing generation across all regions of Latvia, and they are being built in several Latvian regions, as well as in Estonia and Lithuania. Parks are planned in Birzi, Skulte, Bauska, Rujiena, Eleja, Kegums, Kraslava, Priekule, Rezekne and Riga.

The company points out that the design team for the Birzi solar park was composed and expertise was provided exclusively by Latvenergo specialists, drawing on previous experience and knowledge in developing solar power plants.

Latvian resources have been used as far as possible in the project’s development – the compact transformer substations have been manufactured in Latvia and all construction works were carried out by local contractors.

Two dozen sheep from the Bitani organic farm will be grazing in the solar park, keeping grass from overgrowing and shading the panels.

As reported, Latvenergo Group’s turnover was EUR 2.034 billion in 2023, which is 10.4 percent more than a year earlier, while the group’s profit increased by 90.8 percent to EUR 350.9 million.

Latvenergo is engaged in the production and sale of electricity and heat, as well as the sale of natural gas and the provision of electricity distribution services. Latvenergo bonds are listed on the Nasdaq Riga debt securities market.
