Police detain man who illegally stored and sent weapons and explosives through parcel machines

In July, officers of the Riga Regional Police detained a man suspected of storing weapons and explosives at several addresses in Riga and sending them via parcel machines, the State Police informed LETA.

On June 18, criminal proceedings were initiated in connection with the alleged purchase, storage and sale of firearms, their essential components, ammunition and explosives by a man who already had previous criminal record.

The police received information that the man had been sending these explosive items to buyers via parcel machines, thereby exposing members of the public to a potential risk to their health and life.

On July 17, State Police officers arrived at the man’s addresses in Riga, Teikas and Purvciems neighborhoods. There they found 33 essential components of firearms, 150 parts of explosive devices, one signal pistol, 72 shells with possible powder residues and eight detonators.

Information obtained by the police indicates that the man may have purchased some of these items from so-called “black diggers”. The appearance of the recovered items suggests that some of these items may be wartime heritage, but the exact origin of the weapons will be established by forensic examination.

On July 19, the person was declared a suspect in the case and remanded in custody.
