Hamburg-Palanga route may open up amid strengthening ties with Germany

Efforts will continue to be made to put Hamburg on Palanga Airport’s flight map as the economic and military ties between Lithuania and Germany grow stronger, the Vakaru Ekspresas daily on Friday quoted Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports, LTOU), the airport operator in Lithuania, as saying.

Currently, direct flights from Palanga to Copenhagen, Riga and Amsterdam are more focused on the needs of business travelers and inbound tourism, while direct flights to Oslo, London and Dublin – on the needs of the Lithuanian diasporas in those countries.

“Naturally, we do not have any direct flight routes from Palanga aimed at holidaymakers. Since routes to Southern Europe are more for outbound tourists, local authorities and other local organizations are naturally reluctant to contribute and invest, but it seems to me that the emergence of such a route would contribute to the formation of a habit of flying from Palanga. This is still an open question,” Bartkus said.

Regular routes connect Palanga with Copenhagen, Amsterdam, London, Oslo, Riga and Dublin, while Kaunas offers direct flights to 27 cities and Vilnius to 43.
