Estonia among the world’s top nations in cybersecurity

A recent report by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union ranks Estonia among the top-performing countries in cybersecurity.

The Global Cybersecurity Index assessed Estonia’s progress in implementing digital security measures across five key areas — legal, organizational, technical, capacity-building, and cooperation efforts.

The report highlights that Estonia has established robust laws and regulations to protect its cyberspace, along with effective organizational structures and processes that support the management and coordination of cybersecurity.

Additionally, Estonia has made significant investments in modern technology and infrastructure to prevent and detect cyber threats. These measures include security systems, network surveillance, and tools for managing cyber incidents.

Estonia has also consistently prioritized raising cybersecurity awareness and enhancing skills. This effort involves training programs, educational initiatives, and public awareness campaigns aimed at improving the readiness of both individuals and organizations to tackle cyber threats.

Justice and Digital Minister Liisa Pakosta noted that Estonia’s high ranking in the UN’s cybersecurity index is a testament to the dedication of the country’s cybersecurity professionals and the efforts of those who have emphasized the importance of cybersecurity.

Pakosta stressed the continued need to ensure that businesses, institutions, and individuals are aware of cyber threats and know how to protect themselves, their assets, and their data in the future.

This is the fifth time the report has evaluated the cybersecurity performance of countries.

In addition to Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom were also ranked highly.
