Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has referred to the first anniversary of the Hamas terrorist group’s deadly attack on Israel by calling for lasting peace in the region.
Writing on X, President Rinkēvičs noted that one year ago, the terrorists carried out brutal and unjustified attacks against innocent Israeli citizens.
He reiterated his call for an immediate and unconditional release of all Israeli hostages from Gaza, as well as work aimed at reviving political processes which can seek a just and lasting peace.
Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, for her part, argued that there was no justification whatever for the barbaric attacks which Hamas launched against Israel one year ago.
The minister, too, called for the unconditional release of all hostages, adding that Israel does have the right to defend itself in accordance with international humanitarian law.
Latvia does support diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, but the spiralling violence in the region has caused unimaginable suffering, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains unacceptable, Foreign Minister Braže added. She said that Latvia remains committed to a two-state solution as the only path toward lasting peace.
On October 7, 2023, nearly 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed, and 250 were take hostage during a massacre which the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas launched in Israel. In response to this, Israel vowed to destroy Hamas and launched a major military operation in the Gaza Strip.
