Estonian police are investigating two cases of fraud In which two women were bilked out of some EUR 15,000 by scammers.
A woman in the northeastern city of Kohtla-Järve received a phone call on Tuesday from an unknown person who told her that her daughter had caused a traffic accident, and to avoid further problems, she needed to pay EUR 4,000 to the police. Another scammer than rang up the same woman, posing as an investigator who instructed her on how to hand over the money. The police have launched a criminal investigation.
Also on Tuesday, a scammer called a woman in the northeastern border town of Narva, this time claiming that a grandchild had caused a traffic accident and that compensation needed to be paid to avoid imprisonment. The woman believed the scammers and handed over EUR 11,000. She was then asked to withdraw more money from her bank account, but this time a bank teller intervened and recommended that the woman contact the police. She did, and the police have initiated a criminal investigation in this case, as well.
