The Kanama overpass at the intersection of the Tallinn-Pärnu highway and the Tallinn Ring Road in Estonia will be closed to traffic for a full reconstruction from November 4 of this year and until mid-May in 2025.
Traffic on the highway and the ring road will be regulated by traffic signals, and drivers are asked to reckon with additional travel time. These temporary traffic arrangements will remain in place until the work is completed.
Vehicles using the Tallinn Ring Road will be redirected via temporary intersections with traffic lights on the Tallinn-Pärnu highway during the reconstruction of the overpass and its surrounding area. A speed limit of 50 Km/h will apply throughout the area.
“The current overpass is decades old and has deteriorated, which means that it is no longer safe and does not satisfy present-day standards,” says Viktor Kisselyov, director of the northern department of the Estonian Transport Administration. “Demolishing the old overpass and building a new one will improve road traffic safety and enable military transport, heavy lorries and special transport vehicles to use the overpass instead of resorting to detours. This will ensure that transit is more convenient and smoother.”
The temporary traffic arrangements will remain in place until May of next year. Additional restrictions and complete suspension of traffic will occur for a short period during the demolition of the old overpass in mid-November of this year.
The ramps of the Kanama junction will be moved further away from the Tallinn-Pärnu highway, thus making it possible to increase maximum allowed speeds on the main road.
The work will be done by GRK Eesti AS, and supervision will be handled by OÜ Toomtsentrum and OÜ Teehoiu Partnerid.
The project is estimated to cost EUR 13.8 million plus VAT with co-financing of EUR 5.05 million from the Connecting Europe Facility. The financing will allow the EstMilMob military mobility project to improve transport links to the Tapa military base over the next three years.
The new overpass is due to open in early summer next year, and all work is to be completed by September of 2025.
