Lithuanian Parliament approves prime ministerial nominee

The Lithuanian Seimas voted on Thursday to approve Social Democrat Gintautas Paluckas as the country’s next prime minister. 88 MPs voted in favour, 34 were against the proposal, and six MPs abstained.

President Gitanas Nauseda nominated Paluckas to lead Lithuania’s 19th government after he was put forward by the country’s proposed new governing coalition, which is to include the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), the part “For Lithuania,” and the Nemunas Dawn party.

Later in the day Paluckas was set to meet with the president to discuss the formation of a new Cabinet. Once that is done, the nominee will have 15 days’ time to establish a new Cabinet of Ministers and to present its programme to the Seimas.

Paluckas is 45 years old and is an informatics specialist who was nominated for the high office after the LSDP won the recent general election. Party leader Vilija Blinkeviciute chose to keep her seat in the European Parliament, resigned from Lithuania’s parliament and thus negated her possibility to become prime minister.
