AirBaltic announces cancellation of thousands of upcoming flights

The Latvian flag carrier airBaltic has announced plans to cancel 4,670 flights from its hub airports during the summer of 2025.

The airline said on Thursday that this is down to unexpected delays and prolonged engine maintenance by its supplier, Pratt & Whitney. The engine manufacturer’s inability to satisfy its maintenance obligations has impacted the operational capabilities of airBaltic’s Airbus A-220-300 fleet, thus forcing it to adjust its summertime schedule.

airBaltic has been informed by Pratt & Whitney that several of its A220-300 airplanes will remain grounded because of a shortage of engines. The result of this is that the airline will cancel 19 announced routes and reduce frequency of flights on 21 others.

The cancellations will affect an estimated 67,000 passengers, but airBaltic will continue to operate most of its flights to 70 destinations in Europe and beyond. This will ensure that the Baltic States remain linked to the rest of the world.

Customers who have questions about already booked flights are asked to check their reservations via the “Manage my Booking” section on airBaltic.com. They can select alternative flights or request a full refund. Passengers may also contact the airBaltic Call Centre or the third-party Website where the tickets were originally purchased.

airBaltic earned audited revenues of EUR 664.289 million in 2023, up 33.2% from 2022.  The company earned a profit of EUR 33.852 million, as against a loss the year before.

Latvia’s government owns 97.97% of shares in airBaltic, while Aircraft Leasing 1, which belongs to the Danish investment businessman Lars Thuesen, controls the remaining 2.03%.
