Electricity distribution and transmission tariffs to decrease in January 2024

Effective January 1, 2024, electricity distribution and transmission tariffs will decrease, the Public Utilities Commission informed LETA.

The commission says that new differentiated tariffs for electricity distribution and transmission will come into force from next year, and they will be lower than the current tariffs, which have been in force from July 1, 2023.

According to the Public Utilities Commission, the electricity distribution tariff for a customer with, for example, a single-phase connection of 16 amperes and electricity consumption of 100 megawatt-hours (MWh) per month could decrease by around 6 percent next year as compared to July 2023.

At the same time, the regulator points out that the distribution tariff is just one of the components that make up a user’s final light bill, together with the cost of electricity and value added tax.

The Public Utilities Commission also says, referring to distribution system operator Sadales Tikls, that the fixed part of the tariff, the capacity maintenance fee will decrease by approximately 7 to 11 percent from January 2024 as compared to July 2023.

In the meantime, the updated electricity transmission tariff of Augstsprieguma Tikls company, which is made up of two components, the cost of electricity transmission and the cost of capacity maintenance, will be 2.5 percent lower than the current tariff.

The Public Utilities Commission’s Council Chairwoman Alda Ozola points out that the differentiated electricity distribution and transmission tariffs have been revised in the interest of all users, and distribution and transmission system operators have used all available instruments to reduce the tariffs. This taking into account changes in the inflation outlook for the coming years, as well as changes in the electricity price outlook.

Ozola also reminds that every household should examine opportunities to reduce their electricity bills, including by critically assessing their electricity connections and reducing them if necessary and by checking other electricity sales offers.

As reported, the current tariffs for electricity system services approved by the regulator came into force on July 1 this year.
