Entrepreneurs for Peace and Balta will renovate a building for reserve officers’ program at University of Chernihiv

The Entrepreneurs for Peace Foundation has signed a EUR 50,000 donation agreement with the risk insurance company Balta to renovate the building that houses the reserve officers’ training program at Chernihiv Polytechnic University in Ukraine, LETA was informed by representatives of the foundation.

The project will replace windows and doors in the university’s military department building to make the premises suitable for the training process, as well as to increase the building’s energy efficiency.

Laura Skrodele, director of the Entrepreneurs for Peace Foundation, said that this is the first donation from entrepreneurs that the foundation has received for a reconstruction project in Ukraine.

A military department has been established at Chernihiv University in accordance with the June 20, 2023 decree of the Government of Ukraine. It trains reserve officers in various military specialties, where the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine estimates that there is a major shortage.

So far, the University has provided all the necessary administrative and practical support for the new department, but it needs help in providing suitable premises for the renovation of war-damaged buildings.

In total, Chernihiv University has more than 6,500 students in 42 Bachelor, 35 Master and seven PhD programs. It is the largest and the only higher education institution in the region with a population of around one million. According to a decision of the Chernihiv Oblast military administration, the university has been recognized as critical for the functioning of the economy of the oblast.

Chernihiv city and oblast have been under constant attack by the occupying forces since February 24, 2022. Chernihiv was even besieged by Russian troops at the beginning of the war. Even after the liberation of the area from Russian occupation, the invaders continue artillery shelling and air raids. In total, more than 3,500 buildings have been damaged in Chernihiv Oblast. The Chernihiv University has more than 30,000 square meters of war-damaged areas.

The Entrepreneurs for Peace Foundation was set up on the first day of the Russian invasion, bringing together more than 300 Latvian entrepreneurs, and has so far sent a total of more than EUR 9.7 million in aid to Ukraine. In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Entrepreneurs for Peace has implemented several reconstruction projects to provide immediate assistance to the Ukrainian population in the Chernihiv region.
