The Universal Postal Union (UPU) on Wednesday declared Estonia to be a leader in 2024 in the postal sector in the European and Central Asia region.
Each year the UPU evaluates postal services in 174 countries with the help of the Integrated Index for Postal Development. The focus is on the capacity, maturity and development of postal services, ranking them across 10 levels and regional clusters. Estonia’s postal sector gained outstanding results which made it the regional leader. The awards were presented in Bern, Switzerland, as part of the celebration of World Post Day, this year with the added bonus of the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
Mart Mägi is CEO of the Estonian postal and logistics company Omniva, and he says that significant steps have been taken in pursuit of this achievement.
“Omniva has recently focused on streamlining operations, which has greatly improved the quality of our services,” says Mägi. “It’s great to receive recognition of this. We were acknowledged as leaders in the European and Central Asian region last year, and we are delighted to receive the same recognition this year.”
Estonia’s minister for regional affairs and agriculture, Piret Hartman, expressed gratitude for the recognition and stressed Omniva’s role as a leader in the postal sector for the whole region.
“The market is highly competitive, and it’s clear that Omniva is a notable international player in the field of logistics,” the minister says. “Omniva undoubtedly is a role model in the sector, particularly in its ability to adapt to changes in technology and business environments so as to offer solutions which satisfy local and international demands.”
Switzerland has been the global leader in postal service development for the last eight years, though this year it shared top honours with Germany. The two countries were followed by Japan, the United States, France, the Netherlands and Australia.
Regional recognition went not just to Estonia, but also to Brazil, China, Mauritius and Morocco. Hungary, Indonesia and Barbados were declared to be “Rising Stars.”
