Almost half or 49 percent of the population in Latvia do not know how to protect themselves in the digital environment, or their knowledge is incomplete, according to a survey conducted by Baltijas Datoru Akademija, which is part of the Tet group.
About one in ten respondents, or 12 percent, lack knowledge about how to protect themselves in the digital environment, but would like to know. People with primary and secondary education, unskilled workers, people with incomes below EUR 550 per month and seniors over 60 years of age are the most likely to rate their knowledge as insufficient.
On the other hand, 28 percent of the population consider that they are partially educated on digital security issues, but that their knowledge could use updating. People over 50 and those aged between 30 and 39 are the most likely to consider themselves partially educated in this area.
Another 8 percent do not know their level of knowledge on digital security.
The other half, 51 percent, indicated that they were well informed about cyber security issues and ways to protect themselves. Among them, 19 percent have gained their knowledge from the media, while 18 percent, mainly young people, have sought educational information themselves. One in ten, or 10 percent, have learned from an educational course, while the rest have learned from other sources.
The survey was conducted by the research agency Norstat Latvija in February 2024, surveying 1,011 Latvian residents aged 18-74.
