In the first half of this year, the Internal Security Bureau (IDB) has urged the prosecutor’s office to initiate prosecution in 24 criminal proceedings for crimes committed by 41 persons, LETA was informed by the bureau.
In the first half of 2024, the IDB has opened 28 criminal proceedings, received eight criminal proceedings from other pre-trial investigation bodies, and conducted a total of 84 pre-trial investigations, while actively working on the detection and pre-trial investigation of criminal offences allegedly committed by public officials.
During the reporting period, the IDB sent 24 criminal proceedings to the Prosecutor’s Office for prosecution of 41 criminal offences against 41 persons, including 27 officials – ten State Police officials, six State Border Guard officials, four State Fire and Rescue Service officials, two officials of the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs, one official of the Provision State Agency, one official of the Information Center for the Interior Ministry, three municipal police officials, as well as 14 natural persons.
Almost half of the criminal proceedings referred for prosecution in the first half of the year were for abuse of official authority by violence and serious criminal offences committed by public officials in the course of their official duties.
In terms of offences committed by off-duty employees of the Ministry of the Interior, one third of the criminal proceedings referred for prosecution are for economic offences, including money laundering and dissemination of data enabling the illegal use of a financial instrument or means of payment. And 30 percent are for offences against road safety, such as driving under the influence of intoxicating substances or causing road accidents.
The IDB is a state administration institution under the direct supervision of the Interior Minister, whose functions include detection, investigation and prevention of criminal offences committed by employees of subordinate institutions of the Interior Ministry.
