Klaipeda continues to lead Baltic ports in cargo volumes

Klaipeda retains its lead among Baltic ports in terms of cargo volumes, according to January-July figures released by the Lithuanian seaport’s authority on Wednesday.

“The cargo statistics curve is gradually showing positive growth dynamics, and compared to neighboring Baltic ports, Klaipeda Port handled slightly more cargo than all three Latvian ports combined,” it said in a press release.

Klaipeda handled 18.93 million tons of cargo from January to July this year, up 2 percent from 18.6 million tons a year ago.

Riga posted an 8 percent drop to 11.1 million tons, and Ventspils saw its cargo volumes for the seven months fall by 29 percent to 6.4 million tons. Liepaja recorded a 4 percent rise to 4.1 million tons.

Orlen Lithuania’s Butinge oil terminal handled 5.2 million tons of crude from January to July, down 7 percent from the same period last year.
