Ainars Slesers, chairman of the opposition party Latvia first, said in an interview on LTV this morning that a bad peace is better than a good war in reference to the conflict in Ukraine.
Slesers expressed the hope that incoming US President Donald Trump will bring the war to a swift end. He did not elaborate his thinking about the terms of a peace deal, but Ukrainian politicians have already signalled concern about the possibility that a de facto unilateral concession or capitulation might be forced upon them.
The opposition leader accused Latvia’s “power elite” of only working with Democrats in building political relations with the US, but now the Republicans are on the ascendant.
“The world will change,” Slesers declared, adding that the liberal power structure in Latvia also needs altering. He said that before the next election, he will work to consolidate politicians and voters who represent Christian values.
Slesers has been involved in a variety of corruption scandals over the years, including the so-called oligarch affair. Former Latvian President Valdis Zatlers once named it has one of Latvia’s three so-called oligarchs.
