Lithuania records increased air pollution due to burning forests in Belarus

Lithuania recorded increased particulate air pollution on Saturday, and the country’s Environmental Protection Agency said it was due to burning forests and peatbogs in Belarus.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the highest concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) was recorded in Vilnius, Kaunas and Jonava where the daily limit was exceeded by up to 1.5 times.

Concentrations of other pollutants were within the limit.

“According to available data, forests and peatbogs are burning in Belarus, so people can smell the burn in some parts of Lithuania,” environmental officials said.

Environmentalists recommend reducing physical activity outdoors by refraining from longer walks, vigorous running, fast cycling and other activities that increase or intensify breathing.
