Lithuanian president OKs Jarukaitis, Norkus as candidates for CJEU positions

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Wednesday signed a decree approving the government’s nomination of Irmantas Jarukaitis as a judge the Court of Justice of the European Union and of Rimvydas Norkus to as an advocate general of the CJEU.

Following the president’s approval, the government will ask the Seimas to approve the nominations as well, the presidential office said on Wednesday.

“In cooperation with the courts of member states, the CJEU ensures the uniform application and interpretation of EU law, and the importance of judges and advocates general of this institution means that they can only be assumed by lawyers with the highest qualifications and the best reputation,” the president was quoted as saying in the statement.

Under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the judges and advocates general of the CJEU are appointed by common accord of the governments of member states for a term of office of six years, after consultation of a statutory committee.

The CJEU is made up of 27 judges and 11 advocates general, appointed by common accord of member states for a term of six years.

The court monitors the legality of acts of EU institutions, ensures that member states comply with their obligations under the treaties and interprets EU law at the request of national courts.
