Lithuanians expecting lower energy prices from EU

The latest Eurobarometer poll, which was published in Monday, shows that many Lithuanians expect the European Union to do better at co-ordinating energy issues – 71% of Lithuanians, as against 77% as the EU average.

The head of the European Commission’s office in Lithuania, Marius Vascega, says that the bottom line is that Lithuanians expect lower energy prices from the EU.

“50% of Lithuanians say that, while the EU average is 40%,” says Vascega.  “The EU has already taken important steps, including reform of the design of the energy market, investments in transfrontier projects and the fact that as of mid-2024, more than one-half of energy in the EU is based on renewable energy resources.”

75% of Lithuanians (76% of EU citizens) believe that EU policies will reduce dependency on energy imports, and 58% (69%) believe that this will mean lower energy bills.

59% of Lithuanians believe that Europe should electrify all possible uses of energy, including electricity from renewable and low-carbon resources, while 48% (62% in the EU) called for a diversification of energy resources in the EU.  Both in Lithuania and at the EU level, 54% of respondents in the Eurobarometer survey said that energy must be saved wherever that is possible.

61% of respondents in Lithuania (77% in the EU) said that the have changed their habits over the past five years to cut on energy usage in daily life.  38% (55%) have adapted their vehicles for this purpose and 30% (41%) claimed to have changed energy consumption patterns at work.

Of the 40% of respondents in Lithuania (44% in the EU) who have taken steps to cut energy consumption and home, 70% (49%) said that they have insulated their buildings.  17% (27%) replaced a boiler, 15% (13%) installed a heat pump, and 11% (22%) installed solar panels.  44% of respondents in Lithuania (37% in the EU) admitted that they had done nothing in this regard for financial reasons, while 23% (36%) said that this was because of a decision made with the owner or co-owners of their residence.
