According to a survey commissioned by Luminor bank, 87 percent of people in Estonia use a payment card as the main means of payment for purchases, while women use the card somewhat more often than men.
According to the survey conducted by pollster Norstat at the beginning of October, the payment card is popular among all age groups, 85 percent of people aged 60-74 also use it on a daily basis. Cash is used as a daily payment method by 11 percent of respondents. The share of daily cash users is lowest among 18-29-year-olds, 6 percent, and highest among 60-74-year-olds, 15 percent, Luminor said.
Of the Baltic countries, Estonians are the most active users of payment cards: in Latvia, 82 percent of respondents use cards and 17 percent use cash as a daily means of payment, while in Lithuania the indicators are at 81 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
Kaspar Kork, head of Luminor’s customer services, said that such a large share of card payment is no longer a surprise, as the numbers show its constant growth year after year. According to the statistics of the Bank of Estonia, the volume of card transactions increased by 5.3 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same quarter a year ago, reaching 1.9 billion euros. At the same time, cash withdrawals from ATMs decreased by 4.5 percent.
