Latvian boxer Mairis Briedis has retired from professional boxing, according to Briedis’ announcement posted on social networks on Monday.
Briedis devoted 25 years of his life to the sport.
Briedis is a three-time cruiserweight world champion, having held the IBF and Ring titles from 2020 to 2022; the WBC title from 2017 to 2018; and the WBO title in 2019. He also won the World Boxing Super Series in 2020.
In his statement on social media, Briedis said the decision was not an easy one as boxing had always been more than just sports for him: “it was a life filled with passion and emotion”.
Briedis in particular emphasized the role of Latvian fans in his success.
Briedis went on to say that he would help young boxers attain their goals.
As reported, in his last bout this past May Briedis was defeated by Australia’s Jai Opetaia by a unanimous decision.
