Mezviets reappointed for third term as head of State Security Service

The government on Tuesday approved the reappointment of Normunds Mezviets for a third term as head of the State Security Service.

Commenting on the decision, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) told LETA that “life in hybrid warfare requires a professional and patriotic leadership of the services that ensure national security”. Since Mezviets has proved himself as a professional and convincing head of the service, the government decided to nominate him for a third term, Kozlovskis said.

According to the law, the Cabinet of Ministers appoint the head of the State Security Service appointed for a five-year term at the interior minister’s recommendation.

Mezviets was first appointed head of the State Security Service (then Security Police) in November 2014.

Mezviets, 51, has obtained two Master’s degrees at the University of Latvia – Master of Social Sciences in Political Science and Master of Humanities in History. He has been working with national security issues since 2002 and started his career in the Security Police in 2005. At the beginning he helped to develop the Counter-Terrorism Center and later his responsibilities included strategic planning, analysis of intelligence and international intelligence cooperation.
