One in three parents plan to spend between EUR 100 and EUR 200 on preparing children for school – poll

Around one third of parents with children aged seven to 17 years, or 33 percent, plan to spend EUR 100 to EUR 200 on preparing their offspring for the new school year, representatives of SEB Banka informed LETA, citing the bank’s survey.

The main expenditure items named by the surveyed parents are footwear and clothes.

The survey reveals that 30 percent of parents believe that they can get their kids ready for school for up to EUR 100. One in three, or 33 percent, plan to spend between EUR 100 and EUR 200 to prepare their children for school, while 15 percent of respondents are confident that between EUR 200 and EUR 300 will be needed for that purpose. Another 9 percent of parents believe that preparing their kinds for school will cost more than EUR 300.

Apart from clothes and shoes, the most important expenses ahead the school year are special interests education (38 percent), stationery goods (37 percent), meals (32 percent) and extra lessons with private tutors or foreign language courses (25 percent).

The survey also shows that people use the child allowance paid by the state in very different ways. Most parents, or 63 percent, simply spend it on everyday needs. One in ten save for a major purchase for the child. Another 16 percent of parents put it into savings account or investments for their child’s future.

Norstat conducted the survey for SEB Banka in Latvia in July 2024, interviewing 1,001 respondents aged 25 to 65, with children aged seven to 17 years.
