The State Police have found half a million contraband cigarettes stashed away in several garages in Salaspils, the police informed LETA.
Prior to this, Riga Eastern Division of the State Police launched an investigation into a 40-year-old resident of Plavnieki neighborhood of Riga who was selling contraband tobacco products.
On February 27, police officers detained the man and searched his residence in Plavnieki, his automobile and garages in Salaspils.
In the garages, officers found cigarette cartons with Belarusian excise stamps, containing a total of 467,200 contraband cigarettes.
If convicted, the man could be sentenced for up to five years in prison, community service, or a fine, with or without confiscation of property.
The suspect has no previous convictions. He may not leave the country or change his place of residence while the investigation continues.
