Political parties start drawing up electoral lists for 2025 local elections in Riga

Political parties have started drawing up their electoral lists for next year’s municipal elections in Riga, Latvian Television reports.

The Union of Greens and Farmers, which currently is not represented on Riga City Council, is joining forces with Honor to Serve Riga (GKR) for the forthcoming elections. One of their leading candidates will be former health minister Guntis Belevics who has decided to return to politics. Olegs Burovs, an MP whose vote is crucial in ensuring a majority for the government coalition, will be running on the Greens/Farmers/GKR ticket as a candidate for Riga mayor.

Ainars Slesers will top the electoral list of Latvia First party, while former MP Andrejs Klementjevs of Harmony party will be running on the Slesers’ ticket as candidate number two. One of MEP Vilis Kristopans’ sons, Kaspars Kristopans, whose brother Kristaps Kristopans (Latvia First) is already a Saeima member, is also running in the Riga elections.

Former MP Juris Puce will be the lead candidate running on the electoral list of For Latvia’s Development. Other candidates running for Riga City Council include economist Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis and former education minister Anita Muizniece.

Riga Vice Mayor Eduards Ratnieks will stand in the municipal elections on the electoral list of the National Alliance.

Harmony party’s leading candidates in the upcoming local elections include Andris Morozovs, Regina Locmele and Emils Jakrins. MP Aleksejs Roslikovs will be candidate number one running on the Stability ticket.

Councilmember Justine Pantelejeva might lead the electoral list of the Progressives. Meanwhile, the United List has yet to pick its lead candidate for the Riga elections. Saeima member Andris Kulbergs is reportedly being considered as a possible candidate, according to Latvian Television.

Altogether, 60 councilors will be elected to the city council of the Latvian capital. Submission of electoral lists will start in March 2025.
