RFS stun Anderlecht with late minute equaliser

The Latvian football club RFS scored a last-minute equaliser against Brussels Anderlecht in Rīga on Thursday to pull out a 1:1 draw in the UEAF Europa League qualification round at the Daugava Stadium.

Mario Stroeykens scored the loan goal for Anderlecht in the 85th minute, while Moussa D’Diaye kicked in the equaliser for RFS in the 90+6 minute.

RFS is currently in 31st place in the Europea league standings, with two points from four matches.  Anderlecht is in fifth place with ten points.

RFS opened this year’s UEFA Europa League season with a 1:4 loss to Bucharest FCSB, then played a 2:2 draw against Istanbul Galatasaray from Turkey, and then lost to Frankfurt Eintracht from Germany 0:1.

RFS will play its next Europa League group match at home on November 28 against Thessaloniki PAOK from Greece. The club’s final home match will be played on January 23 against Dutch club Amsterdam Ajax.

RFS also has two more road matches upcoming – on December 12 in Belgrade against Tel Aviv Maccabi from Israel and on January 30 in Hamburg against Ukrainian team Kyiv Dynamo.

This is only the second time that a team from Latvia has qualified for the group stage in the UEFA Europa League. FC Ventspils achieved this during the 2009/2010 season.
