Security audit not key reason for tightening procedures at Vilnius Airport – operator

A recent security audit at Vilnius Airport is not the main reason for the tightening of aviation security and screening procedures which are causing queues at the airport, Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports, LTOU), said on Monday.

“I wouldn’t like to elaborate on that, because, as I’ve mentioned, we haven’t yet received those conclusions,” Bartkus told LRT Radio when asked if it was true that the security audit had revealed security gaps.

“Both we and various institutions are monitoring these risk factors, and the procedures that are in place for screening passengers, baggage, hand luggage and checked baggage are being substantially reviewed in light of those factors,” the CEO said.

“In Lithuanian aviation, audits are conducted regularly, so I wouldn’t overemphasize any one audit or another, but when it comes to the latest one, we haven’t received the conclusion yet, so I don’t think we should tie ourselves to that as the key reason,” he added.

The long queues showed that Vilnius Airport is understaffed, according to Bartkus.

LTOU announced on Friday that it had tightened passenger security checks.
