SocDems remain most popular party in Lithuania – poll

The opposition Lithuanian Social Democratic Party remains the most popular party in Lithuania, followed by the ruling conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, according to a new Spinter Tyrimai poll for the delfi.lt news website, published on Thursday.

The February poll shows that 14.9 percent of respondents backed the LSDP, 10.7 percent would vote for the HU-LCD, compared to 16.2 percent and 10.7 percent respectively in January.

The opposition Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union comes in third with 7 percent (7.7 percent in January), followed by the Liberal Movement, part of the ruling block, with 5.9 percent (5.8 percent).

The opposition Democrats “For Lithuania” is next with 5.6 percent (6.9 percent).

14 percent would have voted for another party in February, up from 11 percent in January. And 11 percent would have not voted at all, up from 7.4 percent in January.

When asked to name the politician who would be best suited to serve as prime minister, people mentioned LSDP leader and MEP Vilija Blinkeviciute first. She received 10.3 percent of votes last month, up from 9.8 percent in January.

9 percent mentioned incumbent Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, down from 11.2 percent in January.

In February, 27.1 percent of respondents had a positive or rather positive opinion of the government’s performance, compared to 25.5 percent in January.

Spinter Tyrimai polled 1,012 people on February 18-25.
