Solar, wind power capacity up 30 pct to 3 GW in Lithuania – TSO

The capacity of solar and wind power farms operating in Lithuania grew 30 percent in the first eights months to 3 gigawatts (GW), from 2.3 GW at the beginning of the year.

Another 325 megawatts (MW), or 0.325 GW, of wind power capacity is expected to be connected by the end of this year, Litgrid, Lithuania’s state-owned electricity transmission system operator, said on Thursday.

Its CEO Rokas Masulis says solar and wind power generation capacity has gone up by one GW from last summer.

“We are getting closer and closer to the goal of generating more renewable electricity in our country than we consume,” Masiulis said.

As of 22 August, the authorized generating capacity of solar and wind power farms connected to the country’s electricity transmission and distribution grids stands at 3.03 GW.

Moreover, letters of intent are currently in place to connect 3.3 GW of onshore wind power farms to the transmission grid. Lithuania also has plans to install two offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 1.4 GW.

Also, letters of intent for the development of solar power plants with a total capacity of 4 GW are currently signed.
