Speed cameras to be installed on Reid Road in Tallinn

On July 1, speed cameras will start working in the area of the three-way intersection of Reid Road, Narva Road and Pirita Road in Tallinn, which will not only record speeding vehicles but also those that fail to obey the traffic lights.

Recent measurements have shown that speeding is commonplace in the area of said intersection. On Pirita Road, just before the intersection with Narva Road, where the speed limit is 50 kmh, 40 speeding offenses were recorded in May, the highest speeds recorded being 79 and 82 kmh, respectively.

On Reidi Road, in the direction heading towards Narva Road, 41 violations were identified. On Narva Road, in the outbound direction just before the intersection with Reidi Road, the number of speeders at the end of May was a staggering almost 200.

In the last four years, 11 people have been injured and one has died in traffic accidents at this intersection. There have been run-off-road incidents, collisions with obstacles outside the roadway, side collisions between vehicles, and accidents involving pedestrians at crosswalks.

All necessary procedures have been completed and approvals have been obtained from the Transport Administration and the Police and Border Guard Board to launch the cameras on Reidi Road in July.
