Last year Latvian law enforcement authorities issued speeding tickets worth EUR 8.9 to motorists for their offenses recorded by traffic enforcement cameras, LETA was told at the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD).
In 63 percent of these cases, the speeding vehicles were Latvian-registered cars, while motor vehicles with foreign registration plates were involved in 37 percent of the recorded speeding cases. In 2022, 67 percent of the speeding vehicles were Latvian-registered cars and 33 percent automobiles from foreign countries.
According to CSDD, among vehicles registered in third countries, the highest number of speed limit violations was recorded for vehicles registered in Ukraine, with 28,150 speed violations recorded last year, down 1.2 percent from 2022.
Meanwhile, the number of Russian-registered vehicles violating speed limits on Latvian roads fell by 56.3 percent from 2022 to 9,211 offenses recorded last year.
The foreign vehicles caught speeding last year also include 8,327 Moldova-registered autos, 3,342 Belarusian-registered cars and 1,109 vehicles from Georgia.
CSDD operates 100 stationary speed cameras across Latvia, while Latvijas Valsts Celi (Latvian State Roads) operates average speed cameras.
