126,000 people in Latvia have legal incomes below EUR 1,000 per year – new Revenue Service head

The newly appointed Director General of the State Revenue Service Baiba Smite-Roke said in an interview with commercial TV3 television today legal income of 126,000 people in Latvia does not reach EUR 1,000 per year.

“126,000 people in Latvia have an income of less than EUR 1,000 a year. A year! So the logical question is what do they do for a living?” said Smite-Roke. At the same time, however, she also noted that among the population concerned, about 80,000 are aged between 20 and 70.

Smite-Roke also pointed out that the Revenue Service will not track every euro that is withdrawn or deposited in an ATM, but the service will analyze those citizens whose legal income during the year is so low that there is nothing to deposit in an ATM while these activities are taking place.

“Our desire is to have transparency in cash movements, but we will only target those citizens who have no logical justification for their cash activities,” Smite-Roke said.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday confirmed Baiba Smite-Roke as director general of the State Revenue Service (VID). Smite-Roke will take office on February 13.

Smite-Roke has been working as Deputy Director of the VID Tax Administration since 2020 and as Director of the VID Tax Administration since May 2023. Smite-Roke holds a professional Master’s degree in Economics and is currently pursuing her PhD in Economics and Management Studies.
