All Media Latvia ordered to pay moral damages for spreading false claims about late election officer’s Covid-19 certificate

All Media Latvia has been ordered to pay EUR 4,000 in moral damages for publishing false allegations that the Central Election Commission’s former head Arnis Cimdars had illegally obtained a fake Covid-19 vaccine certificate, LETA learned at the Riga Regional Court.

Information on Cobalt law firm’s website shows that the regional court’s ruling ordering All Media Latvia to pay moral damages for publishing false and defamatory information about the late Cimdars came into force in January this year.

As reported, police in 2021 had started an inquiry into media reports that Arnis Cimdars, the former head of the Central Election Commission, had allegedly presented a fake Covid-19 certificate to medics.

TV3, a channel of All Media Latvia, reported on October 22, 2021 that Cimdars, who died of Covid-19 on October 20 the same year, had probably presented a fake vaccination certificate to medics.

Cimdars’ family, however, stressed that Cimdars did not have a fake Covid-19 certificate and that both before and during his illness he openly declared to his family members and the medics who were treating him that he had not been vaccinated for Covid-19.

According to his relatives, Cimdars assumed that he would fight the infection successfully and obtain immunity to the coronavirus in a natural way.

Moreover, there was no information in the e-health system about Cimdars’ vaccination for Covid-19, his family stressed.

Cimdars’ family demanded that TV3 apologize and retract the report about the false vaccine certificate.

As reported, Arnis Cimdars, a former chairman of the Central Election Commission, died of Covid-19 on October 20, 2021, aged 59.

During the pandemic, Cimdars was among founders of Latvia First party, and like his party, objected to mandatory vaccination.
