Bailiffs to send more than 100,000 reminder Christmas cards to debtors

Bailiffs are sending debtors across Estonia 101,254 red electronic Christmas cards reminding them to pay their debts.

The purpose of the Christmas card is to remind that even on Christmas Eve, there is someone somewhere who is waiting for a debt to be paid. Whether it is a child waiting for an unpaid maintenance allowance, another creditor for compensation for damages resulting from a court judgment, the bank for fulfilling one’s loan obligation, the state for unpaid traffic fines, and so on.

In total, the bailiffs expect the debtors to pay altogether 1.6 billion euros by the end of the year. The average debt that is enforced in Estonia is 2,350 euros and the largest debt is 33 million euros. The average debtor in trouble with a bailiff is a man in his forties. The record holder has had 702 cases pending.

Altogether 15,176 children are waiting for maintenance allowance.

A total of 38 bailiffs have pending proceedings against 101,254 debtors. A total of 503,076 cases are in progress as of the end of the year, of which 270,591 are carried out for the benefit of the state and 232,485 for private claimants.

In the first 11 months of this year, 98,062 procedures have been initiated. In 2022, the total number of procedures was 97,323.
