Births in Latvia down 10.6% in January-April

Latvia recorded 4,215 births in the first four months of 2024, which is a decrease of 10.6 percent, or 502 births, compared to the same period a year ago, according to provisional data released by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

The babies born in the first four months of this year include 2,162 boys, down 10.1 percent, or 244 newborns, from the first four months of 2023, and 2,053 girls, down 11.2 percent, or 258 newborns.

In April, Latvia recorded 1,061 births, down 10.3 percent, or 122 newborns, from the same month a year ago when 574 boys and 487 girls were born in Latvia.

In the first four months of 2024, Latvia recorded 9,399 deaths, down 6.8 percent, or 689 deaths, from the same period a year ago when Latvia recorded 10,088 deaths.

Consequently, in the four-month period this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 5,184. A year ago, the gap was 5,371.

In the first four months of 2024, 1,661 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 19.3 percent, or 397 fewer marriages than in the corresponding period of 2023.

As at May 1 this year, the estimated population of Latvia was 1.863 million.
