Cargo turnover at Liepaja Port down 8.1% in nine months

In the first mine months of this year, 5.189 million tons of cargo were handled in the Port of Liepaja, which is 8.1 percent less than in the corresponding period of 2022, according to the information released by the Ministry of Transport.

Among them, 3.916 million tons of cargo were sent from the Port of Liepaja in the first nine months of 2023, which is 4.4 percent less than in the corresponding period of 2022, while the amount of received cargo declined 18.1 percent to 1.273 million tons.

In the first nine months of this year, the port handled 3.529 million tons of bulk cargo, which is 4.5 percent less than in the corresponding period a year earlier, 1.448 million tons of general cargo, which is a drop of 14.4 percent, as well as 211,800 tons of liquid cargo, which is 19.7 percent less than last year in the corresponding period.

In the first nine months of this year, 2.285 million tons of grain and its products were handled in the Port of Liepaja, which is 0.8 percent less than in the first nine months of 2022, ro-ro or roll on/roll off cargo was handled in the amount of 1.179 million tons, which is 1.4 percent more, construction materials – 555,500 tons, which is 5.4 percent less, oil products – 210,500 tons, which is 12.1 percent less, and wood chips handled in the amount of 208,400 tons, which is 12.8 percent more than in the corresponding period of last year.

As reported, in 2022, a total of 7.609 million tons of cargo were handled at Liepaja Port, which is 7.8 percent more than in 2021. Meanwhile, in the first nine months of last year, Liepaja handled 5.648 million tons of cargo at the port.

The Port of Liepaja is the third largest port in Latvia in terms of cargo turnover.
