Cargo turnover at Riga Port down 18.5% in first nine months

The Freeport of Riga handled 14.105 million tons of cargo in the first nine months of 2023, a decrease of 18.5 percent against the corresponding period in 2022, according to information released by the port.

Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in January-September this year, dropped 26 percent year-on-year to 5.699 million tons. Handling of general cargo was down 1.1 percent to 5.699 million tons, and reloading of liquid cargo fell 38.2 percent to 705,000 tons.

Reloading of containerized cargo increased 3.5 percent year-on-year to 3.637 million tons in January-September this year, making up 25.8 percent of the port’s total cargo turnover (20.3 percent a year ago).

Handling of timber fell 12.5 percent to 1.844 million tons, making up 13.1 percent of total cargo turnover (up from 12.2 percent a year ago).

Reloading of grain products increased 11.5 percent year-on-year to 2.054 million tons, or 11.5 percent of all cargos (14.6 percent a year ago).

Reloading of coal was down 60.5 percent to 1.36 million tons, making up 9.6 percent of all cargo reloaded in the nine months of this year (19.9 percent a year ago).

Handling of woodchip pellets at the port slowed by 12.7 percent year-on-year to 1.028 million tons, while reloading of oil products decreased by 39.6 percent to 633,200 tons.

In 2022, the port of Riga handled 23.52 million tons of cargo, which is a rise of 9.4 percent from the previous year.

Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover.
