Elisa Estonia replacing standard-size SIM cards with half smaller ones

Elisa Estonia is gradually replacing standard-size SIM card holders with a half-size format in order to reduce the amount of plastic waste used in the production of SIM cards by as much as 50 percent.

The first SIM card holders, half the previous size, have already reached Elisa’s outlets and customers.

“Mini-format SIM cards help to prevent half of the plastic waste produced earlier,” Mailiis Ploomann, head of private customer unit at Elisa Estonia, said. While the size of the chip remains the same, the amount of plastic around it becomes smaller, and the amount of plastic material waste is thereby halved.

Ploomann pointed out that plastic pollution is a problem facing the whole world, as hundreds of millions of tons of plastic materials are produced every year, some of which end up in the environment around us.

The executive noted that customers have become more environmentally conscious, leading to increased expectations for the use of eco-friendly alternatives.

“Consumers also expect us to act more responsibly and for each company’s impact on the environment to be lower,” she added.
