Estonia, Latvia to explore possibilities for production of sustainable aviation fuels

Estonia and Latvia are to study the potential for producing sustainable, meaning more environmentally friendly, aviation fuels in the Baltic Sea region, with the European Commission allocating 200,000 euros to each country.

“The aviation sector has an important role to play in reducing air pollution, which is why sustainable alternatives to the fossil fuels widely used in aviation must be sought and implemented. Sustainable aviation fuels have the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation sector and support efforts to mitigate climate change,” Sander Salmu, deputy secretary general for mobility at the Estonian Ministry of Climate, said in a press release.

The results of the study can serve as a guide for investors and provide valuable support for countries to make more informed decisions regarding the development of the aviation sector. The broader aim is to reduce CO2 emissions in aviation and thus decrease the environmental footprint.

Sustainable aviation fuels can be, for example, biofuel or hydrogen fuel, but also some new type of fuel whose production capacities have not yet been developed in Estonia.

The survey will launch in the second half of this year.
