Government approves stricter requirements on pedestrians, e-scooter and bicycle riders

The government on Tuesday approved amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations drafted by the Transport Ministry, which introduce stricter safety requirements for pedestrians, e-scooter and bicycle riders, as well as clarify the rules on road transport, disabled parking permits, use of public transport lanes, and others.

According to the Transport Ministry, as of January 1 this year riders of e-scooters aged 17 and under must wear a safety helmet and, preferably, high-visibility clothing when riding their e-scooter tool in conditions of low visibility or heavy traffic.

E-scooters’ maximum speed has been limited to 25 kilometers per hour.

The amendments also include stricter requirements for bicycle riders, stating that children under the age of 16 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.

Several provisions concerning cyclists and e-scooter riders have been clarified regarding sharing the road with other users, driving on pavements, and others.

The amendments also introduce a number of changes for pedestrians regarding movement outside residential areas and mandatory use of reflectors after dark.

Furthermore, the amendments introduce several new requirements on roller skaters and skateboarders in residential areas.
